WHO YOU ARE

My name is Jake Patao and I come from Irvine, California. I also spend a good portion of my childhood in Yokohama, Japan as half of my family live there. Japanese culture is a big part of who I am while also being American, half of each culture.

Where I'm going is not set in stone, nor something I can predict accurately. The general direction I'm aiming for is somewhere in the film industry as an Assistant Director, Producer, or any logistical role involved in film production. With my business major, I will also look at the possibility of a marketing position or starting my own production company. I plan on getting to these potential places by seizing opportunities on sets that come up through my network in the industry as well as applying myself to various productions in the LA area. I will also look to apply for internships and job opportunities in marketing to expand myself in that field if film production does not immediately work out. Worst case scenario, I will look for a profession in Japan utilizing my bilingual skills.

I'm like my parents in the way that I am globally minded, well-spoken, and caring. In some ways though, I'm far from my parents in the extent of how hard they work and how they teach. My hard-working nature is fairly selective compared to them and I teach with more empathy than they do.

The expectations I've developed for myself due to my upbringing with friends and peers who are very successful and expect similar success out of me. Not simply because they think being successful means I'm worthy but because they believe I'm capable of it. Because of that, I have very harsh expectations on myself that have become much more intrinsic which I'm developing a better relationship with as of late.

Another relative I had looked up to a lot was my late grandmother on my Japanese side. She was someone who was kind and looked out for others while being very down to earth. She came off as cold but really cared deeply about those around her and I miss that about her. I try to embody the best parts of her as a way to remember her as well.

I feel as though I am like a Penguin in the way that, as a male, I'm more caring for those close to them (their offspring) than most male animals in the animal kingdom. I feel there are masculine traits I don't completely align with and this characteristic of penguins, one of many I relate with, is an instance where they break the norms of what males in the animal kingdom tend to do.

I had a significant encounter with nature when taking walks around the Japanese countryside when I was on vacation once. I was at a forest where you could pick out rhino beetles off trees to take home and it was my first pet as a small child. That was definitely a memorable experience that I look back on fondly.
