Monster Hunter: Wilds just came out today! If you aren't someone that is familiar with Monster Hunter, it's a game franchise with a huge following in Japan that later spread to the rest of the world! Now if you're asking yourself: "What do you do in Monster Hunter?", then I need you to read the title of the game one more time. Still don't know? Keep reading the title of the game until you figure it out, you got this I believe in you.
Now for a game with such a simple premise, it might be surprising to hear of its once cult following that has now become an international phenomenon in the gaming community. I, as someone who has been a part of this cult following for a long time, am surprised about its popularity today too. The game had a much stronger following in Japan due to the original games being on the PSP (play station portable) and how gaming among friends in person was heavily encouraged in the early 2000's of Japan. There's a reason why Gameboys and Nintendo DS's took off so much in Japan. Think of Monster Hunter like the Pokemon for teenagers and young adults that love to play video games.
Monster Hunter's popularity in Japan goes so deep into its culture that many large firms and companies will make the day a new Monster Hunter game is released a holiday. You can probably guess why. With the ludicrous amount of people that just so happen to call off "sick" or use their vacation days on the same day a new Monster Hunter game comes out, it'd probably be unproductive to operate as usual. If this doesn't communicate how big of a craze this franchise is in Japan alone, then I'm not sure what will.
Fast-forward to when it became a worldwide phenomenon with the release of Monster Hunter: World. This was the version of the game first available on most consoles outside of Nintendo and the PSP that appealed to a MUCH larger audience than its niche player base before. The game quickly took off and with its release onto PC as well, it became the reason for Monster Hunter becoming a beloved franchise. Now today with the release of the newest game improving heavily from World, Monster Hunter: Wilds, there will be even more people calling out today not just in Japan but across the world.
Hey Jake! I am excited for the game too! My friend introduced me Monster Hunter World and I fell in love with the game. After world I try to play Rise but the graphic is just not for me. I just bought Wild and am going to play it during the spring break. Have fun hunting!
ReplyDeleteHi Jake, I have never heard of Monster Hunter before, but it sounds very interesting! I loved playing Pokemon when I was younger and the Nintendo DS, so I will likely check out Monster Hunter. I didn't know this game was so big in Japan.
